Brooklyn, NY native Rebecca Pronsky continues to stake her claim as
one of New York's finest young songwriters. Rebecca's
songs are "literate,
passionate, and wry"
(Time Out NY) with "brutal, cutting lyricism"
(Ithaca Times), and "a little twang and a lot of empathy"
(Philadelphia City Paper).
Rebecca Pronsky is a singer first. Her singing talent was obvious very
early on and she was encouraged to begin vocal training as a child.
It wasn’t until she was 16, after many years of encountering songs
as a performer, that she tried her hand at actually writing one. Rebecca’s
experience as a singer, working in so many genres and styles, translated
well to songwriting. With her guitar in hand, Rebecca began to craft
a musical landscape for her voice to come home to.
At Brown University, Rebecca studied ethnomusicology and jazz singing
and recorded her first demo of original music “Milestone.”
Demo and diploma in hand, Rebecca moved back to Brooklyn. Soon she met
guitarist and composer Rich Bennett who helped
her record 'The Early Hours' in 2004.
Rebecca’s first full-length studio album 'Departures and Arrivals'
met the world in October 2007 via Nine
Mile Records. Rich Bennett worked with Rebecca and bandmates to
produce "her most polished effort yet with a distinct country-pop
flavor"(East Bay Express). The album "struck a deep
chord with a little twang and a lot of empathy" (Philadelphia City
Paper) and is "a definite grower as the songs reveal their
secrets with repeated listens" (Americana UK).
Rebecca's 2009 EP ‘The Best Game in Town’ is a limited edition
EP of 5 new tunes, keeping us sated until her next full-length gets
underway this summer. Jezebel Music says the EP "invokes probably
the strongest feelings of western nostalgia you could possibly experience
in the comfort of your home...her passionate vocals and textured sandy
tones vibe a southern belle who just wandered off the range to find
herself eye-level with a mic."
Rebecca has been touring heavily since 2006, playing around 75-100 shows
a year in the US and Europe. With songs that straddle the line between
traditional and indie, Rebecca has shared stages with a varied group
of artists including Freedy Johnston, Patty Larkin, Peter Case,
Josh Ritter, Erin McKeown, Loudon Wainwright III, Caroline Herring,
Sarah Bettens of K's Choice, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, The Everybodyfields,
Shannon McNally, Catie Curtis, The Bowerbirds, Eilen Jewell, Tracy Grammer,
Carrie Rodriguez, Wayne Hancock, Steve Forbert, and many more.
Frustrated with the overwhelming worlds of both songwriting and New
York City, Rebecca founded the Brooklyn
Songwriters Exchange to create community among local artists. Now
in its 5th year, the BSX continues to present great local musical talent,
and Rebecca still hosts and curates the series.
